Alumnus Christopher Cayari (Ph.D. in Music Education, 2015), is one of two recipients of the 2015 Outstanding Dissertation Award of the Council for Research in Music Education (ODA). This is one of the most prestigious awards in the field of Music Education Research, and Cayari is the first U of I graduate to win the award.

Miriam Piilonen, a doctoral candidate in music theory and cognition in the Bienen School of Music, has won a Society for Music Theory SMT-40 Dissertation Fellowship award.
